Page[2]=new Array("The Herald","The early nineteenth century was a period of messianic expectations in many lands.","Deeply disturbed by the implications of scientific inquiry and industrialization, earnest believers from many religious backgrounds turned to the scriptures of their faiths for an understanding of the accelerating processes of change.","The Shrine of the Báb - Haifa, Israel.","In Europe and America groups like the Templers and the Millerites believed they had found in the Christian scriptures evidence supporting their conviction that history had ended and the return of Jesus Christ was at hand.","A markedly similar ferment developed in the Middle East around the belief that the fulfillment of various prophecies in the Qur'an and Islamic Traditions was imminent.","By far the most dramatic of these millennialist movements emerged in Irán.","It focused on the person and teachings of a young merchant from the city of Shiráz, known to history as the Báb.","From 1844 to 1863, Persians of all classes were caught up in a storm of hope and excitement, aroused by the Báb's announcement that the Day of God was at hand and that He was Himself the One promised in Islamic scripture.","Humanity stood, He said, on the threshold of an era that would witness the restructuring of all aspects of life.","In some respects, the Báb's role can be compared to John the Baptist in the founding of Christianity.","The Báb was Bahá'u'lláh's herald: His primary mission was to prepare the way for Bahá'u'lláh's coming.","Accordingly, the founding of the Babí Faith is viewed by Bahá'ís as synonymous with the founding of the Bahá'í Faith--and its purpose was fulfilled when Bahá'u'lláh announced in 1863 that He was the Promised One foretold by the Báb.","The ring and the prayer beads of the Báb.","An independent religion","At the same time, however, the Báb founded a distinctive, independent religion of His own.","Known as the Babí Faith, that religious dispensation spawned its own vigorous community, own scriptures, and left its own indelible mark on history.","The Babí Faith was founded on 23 May 1844 when a 25-year-old merchant in the Iranian city of Shiráz announced that He was Islam's promised Qa'im, "He Who Will Arise." Although the young merchant's given name was Siyyid 'Ali-Muhammed, He took the name "Báb," a title that means "Gate" or "Door" in Arabic.","His coming, the Báb explained, represented the portal through which the universal Messenger of God expected by all humanity would soon appear.","The front door of the Báb's house - Shiráz, Irán.","Accounts agree that the Báb was an extraordinary child.","Born on 20 October 1819, He possessed a surprising wisdom and nobility, reminiscent of the young Jesus, Upon reaching manhood, the Báb joined his uncle in the family business, a trading house.","His integrity and piety won the esteem of the other merchants with whom He came in contact.","He was also known for His generosity to the poor.","After His announcement, the Báb attracted followers rapidly, and the new religious movement spread through Irán like wildfire.","This growth stirred opposition and persecution--especially among the religious establishment, who saw a threat to their power and prestige.","In the course of this persecution, the Báb was imprisoned several times.","The room where the Báb declare His mission on His house - Shiráz, Irán.","His major work, the Bayan, abrogated certain Muslim laws and replaced them with new ones.","The Bayan stressed a high moral standard, with an emphasis on purity of heart and motive.","It also upheld the station of women and the poor, and it promoted education and useful sciences.","The central theme of the Bayan was the imminence of a second Messenger from God, one Who would be far greater than the Báb, and Whose mission would be to usher in the age of peace and plenty that had for so long been promised in Islam, as well as in Judaism, Christianity, and all the other world religions.","Persecution and execution","The hearts and minds of those who heard the message of the Báb were locked in a mental world that had changed little from medieval times.","Thus, by proclaiming an entirely new religion, the Báb was able to help His followers break free entirely from the Islamic frame of reference and to mobilize them in preparation for the coming of Bahá'u'lláh.","The boldness of this proclamation--which put forth the vision of an entirely new society--stirred intense fear within the religious and secular establishments.","Accordingly, persecution of the Bábís quickly developed.","Those opposed to the Báb ultimately argued that He was not only a heretic, but a dangerous rebel.","The authorities decided to have Him executed.","The table used by the Báb to read the Holy Qur'án.","On 9 July 1850, this sentence was carried out, in the courtyard of the Tabríz army barracks.","Some 1O,OOO people crowded the rooftops of the barracks and houses that overlooked the square.","The Báb and a young follower were suspended by two ropes against a wall.","A regiment of 750 Armenian soldiers, arranged in three files of 250 each, opened fire in three successive volleys.","So dense was the smoke raised by the gunpowder and dust that the sky was darkened and the entire yard obscured.","As recorded in an account filed with the British Foreign Office, the Báb was not to be seen when the smoke cleared.","His companion stood uninjured and untouched by the bullets.","The ropes by which he and the Báb had been suspended were rent into pieces.","Ruins of the Tabríz fortress - Tabríz, Irán.","The Báb was found back in His cell, giving final instructions to one of His followers.","Earlier in the day, when the guards had come to take Him to the execution ground, the Báb had warned that no "earthly power" could silence Him until He had finished all that He had to say.","Now, when the guards arrived a second time, the Báb calmly announced:",""Now you may proceed to fulfill your intention."","For the second time, the Báb and His young companion were brought out for execution.","The Armenian troops refused to fire again, and a Muslim firing squad was assembled and ordered to shoot.","This time the bodies of the pair were shattered, their bones and flesh mingled into one mass.","Surprisingly, their faces were untouched.",""This is the changeless Faith of God, eternal in the past, eternal in the future." Haifa, Israel.","Among the followers of the Báb there was an outstanding youth of noble heritage, Whose name was Mírzá Husayn-Alí Núrí (1817-1892), Who later would adopt the name of Bahá’u’lláh (the Glory of God).","His kindly character, as well as His wisdom and detachment from material wealth earned Him the love and affection of the people.","After the execution of the Báb, He predicted, there would come imminently another Messenger from God, Who would fulfill the prophecies of Judaism, Christianity, Islám and the other principal religions of the world, inaugurating an era of peace and justice for all.","In 1852, while He was in Tihrán because of His activities as a Babí, Bahá’u’lláh was exiled to Baghdad and, in 1863, declared that He was the awaited Messenger of God.","He was imprisoned in one of the most inhumane dungeons of the capital of Irán.","It was there that he received the first divine sign of the mission that awaited Him as the promise of all the religions of the past.","Birth of the Bahá'í Faith","The protests of the European delegations, together with the position and the reputation of Bahá’u’lláh prevented His execution.","In 1853, He and His family arrived as exiles at Baghdád.","The gradual reorganization of the disperse and demoralized Babí community was a clear evidence of the authority of Bahá'u'lláh and induced the Iranian government to request the Turkish government to make yet another exile to farther lands.","In April of 1863, just a few days before leaving towards Istanbul (Constantinople), Bahá’u’lláh brought together a small group of Bábís, to whom He declared that He was the awaited Messenger of God.","With this declaration the Bahá’í community was born.","All along a 40-year period of exile at the hands of the Persian authorities and after a few months in the Ottoman capital, Bahá’u’lláh was exited again, this time to Edirne (ancient Adrianople in European Turkey).","From there, Bahá’u’lláh addressed letters to the kings and sovereigns of the most powerful nations of the world (Napoleon III, Czar Alexander II, Queen Victoria, Kaiser Wilhelm I), as well as to the great religious authorities of the day, like Pope Pius IX.","In those letters, Bahá’u’lláh announced His mission, counseled them about the excesses they committed against their subjects, invited them to establish world peace and exhorted them to govern with justice and compassion, and warned them of the great consequences that would result if they were to continue with their negligence.","The Ottoman emperor personally decided to banish Bahá’u’lláh to the penal colony of Akká (St.","John of Acre, in what is today Israel), where His imprisonment continued within the city itself (until 1877) and in the outlying area via house arrest (until 1892).","He was ironically received by the populace as the god of the Persians, but Bahá’u’lláh went on to gain the respect and admiration of all who came in contact with Him.","During all of these years, Bahá’u’lláh revealed innumerable mystical odes and poems, ethical and social teachings, divinely inspired laws and ordinances that constitute the fundamental body of the Sacred Bahá’í Writings.","The central points in the message of Bahá’u’lláh can be summarized as global unity and justice.","He taught that there exists only one God Who has revealed His will through a series of divine Teachers such as Abraham, Moses, Jesus Christ, Muhammad, Buddha and Zoroaster, while the social teachings of the great religions that they founded differ according to the time and place where they were revealed.","The spiritual essence of all religions is the same: that the purpose of every human being is to know and to worship his Creator.","In this epoch, humanity is able to recognize the oneness of God, of religion and of the human family.","The succession","Bahá’u’lláh passed away on 29 May 1892.","In His Will and Testament He called upon all the Bahá’ís to turn toward His oldest son, ‘Abbás Effendi, known as ‘Abdu’l-Bahá, "the servant of Glory" (1844-1921), Whom He named as the sole Interpreter of His Teachings.","This fact, also unique in the history of the great religions, is known as the Covenant of Bahá’u’lláh.","At that time the Bahá’í community was composed of several tens of thousands of followers dispersed throughout half a dozen countries of the Mid East.","In 1909, after the Young Turk revolution, ‘Abdu’l-Bahá was freed from confinement.","A little later he left for Europe.","In 1911 He visited London and Paris, and in 1912 He began a long trip that would take Him to North America.","During these trips ‘Abdu’l-Bahá publicly proclaimed, in churches, synagogues, universities and all kinds of forums, the message revealed by His Father.","His life, dedicated to exemplify the Bahá’í teachings, awoke the admiration of all those who met Him.","The Shrine of the Báb at night - elections.","Not a sect, an independent religion","In the past, scholars sometimes referred to the Bahá'í Faith as a "sect" of Islam--owing to the fact that its Prophet and early followers emerged from an Islamic society.","Today, religious specialists recognize that such a reference would be equivalent to calling Christianity a "sect" of Judaism, or referring to Buddhism as a "denomination" of Hinduism.","Although Christ was indeed Jewish and Buddha was born a Hindu, Their religious messages were not merely re-interpretations of the parent religions--but went far beyond them.","In the same way, Bahá'u'lláh laid entirely new spiritual foundations.","His writings are independent scripture, and His work transcends that of a religious reformer.","As historian Arnold Toynbee noted in 1959:",""Bahaism [sic] is an independent religion on a par with Islam, Christianity, and the other recognized world religions.","Bahaism is not a sect of some other religion; it is a separate religion, and it has the same status as the other recognized religions."","Religion and social change","Historically, religion has been among the most powerful agents for changing human attitudes and behavior.","Religion has traditionally defined what it means to be human, and it has defined the nature of our goals and relationships.","And it is on this point--the struggle to change human attitudes and behavior--that the Bahá'í approach to the problems of education, development and environmental conservation offers perhaps the most hope.","Because the material means of the Bahá'í community are limited, most of these efforts are small in scale, serving their immediate locality.","Nevertheless, the approach to creating and operating these projects is distinctively Bahá'í.","Directly or indirectly, nearly all promote the oneness of humanity.","Many incorporate an emphasis on uplifting the status of women.","Many seek to serve minority populations that have been discriminated against.","Most make extensive use of the principle of consultation in an effort to seek input from--and empower--those whom the projects attempt to serve.","The aggregate result is the emergence of a new model for integrated and comprehensive social and economic development.","Science and religion","The theme of unity also emerges in Bahá'u'lláh's teachings on science.","His writings portray science and religion as different yet harmonious approaches to the comprehension of reality.","These two paths are essentially compatible and mutually reinforcing.","Scientific method is humanity's tool for understanding the physical side of the universe.","It can describe the composition of an atomic nucleus or the molecular structure of DNA.","It is the key to new technologies.","Science cannot, however, guide us in the use of such knowledge.","The revelation of God offers to humanity a basis for values and purpose.","It provides answers to those questions of morals, human purpose, and our relationship to God that science cannot approach.","The independent investigation of reality, whether scientific or religious, is strongly encouraged in Bahá'u'lláh's writings.","Individuals should strive, He said, to free themselves from prejudices, preconceptions and reliance on tradition or traditional authorities.","Consultation is a critical tool for discovering truth.","Social and moral teachings","One of the extraordinary features of the writings of Bahá'u'lláh is the degree to which they accurately forecast the cutting edge issues that humanity has increasingly faced.","Throughout His writings, Bahá'u'lláh called for a complete restructuring of the global social order.","His vision of renewal touches on all aspects of life, from personal morality to economics and governance; from community development to religious practice.","The central theme of Bahá'u'lláh's writings is that humanity is one single race and the day has come for its unification into one global society.","Through an irresistible historical process, the traditional barriers of race, class, creed, faith and nation will break down.","These forces will, Bahá'u'lláh said, give birth in time to a new universal civilization.","The crises now afflicting the planet face all its peoples with the need to accept their oneness and work towards the creation of a unified global society.","Bahá'u'lláh outlined certain fundamental principles upon which this new world civilization should be founded.","These include the elimination of all forms of prejudice; full equality between the sexes; recognition of the essential oneness of the world's great religions; the elimination of extremes of poverty and wealth; universal education; a high standard of personal conduct; the harmony of science and religion; a sustainable balance between nature and technology; and the establishment of a world federal system, based on collective security and the oneness of humanity.","Covering questions pertaining to the role of women, race relations, economic justice, environmental degradation, and world order, these principles illustrate the concerns that have fueled the century's most dynamic movements.","And, accordingly, they have come to head the social and political agenda of humanity.","There has never been a futurist, a forecaster, or a prophet whose vision has so accurately foreseen the critical features of the social landscape.","Far from fading, a century after He lived, the issues Bahá'u'lláh focused on have come to dominate the collective life of humanity.","The Bahá'í International Community and the United Nations","The worldwide Bahá'í community manages its relations with the outside world through the offices of the Bahá'í International Community.","Since 1948, the Bahá'i International Community has enjoyed recognition as an international non-governmental organization at the United Nations.","Since 1970, it has held consultative status with the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and with the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF).","It also has working relations with the World Health Organization (WHO), and is associated with the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).","The work of the Bahá'í International Community is handled by several specialized offices.","These include a Secretariat, a United Nations Office, an Office of Public Information, an Office of the Environment, and an Office for the Advancement of Women.","Through representatives based at the Bahá'í World Centre in Haifa and in New York, Geneva, Paris, Hong Kong, London, Jerusalem, and Fiji, these offices are involved in a wide range of activities, including efforts in peace-building, human rights, education, health, environmental conservation and sustainable development, and the promotion of women's equality.","Many of these activities are undertaken in collaboration with national Bahá'í communities.","An international newsletter, ONE COUNTRY, reports on these activities.","The Bahá'í International Community also collaborates with many international non-governmental organizations.","It is, for example, a member of the World Wide Fund for Nature's Network on Conservation and Religion, the Center for Our Common Future, the Education for All Network, the World Conference on Religion and Peace, and the Advocates for African Food Security.","The Covenant","Bahá'ís believe that the distinctive unity of the Bahá'í Faith stems from a promise from God to humanity that assures His continuing guidance after the passing of Bahá'u'lláh.","This promise is referred to as the Covenant.","The idea of a covenant between man and God is, of course, familiar to the followers of many religions.","Many Jews understand that God entered into a covenant with them, promising to guide them as long as they obeyed His laws.","Many Christians, too, understand that Jesus entered into a new covenant with His followers.","For Bahá'ís, the Covenant made by Bahá'u'lláh is both a renewal of the promise of Divine guidance and a system that ensures its continuance.","Specifically, the Covenant can be understood to be synonymous with the line of succession described in the Will and Testament of Bahá'u'lláh.","This line goes from Bahá'u'lláh to His son, 'Abdu'l-Bahá, and then from 'Abdu'l-Bahá to His grandson, Shoghi Effendi, and to the Universal House of Justice.","To be faithful to the Covenant of Bahá'u'lláh is to be obedient to Him as God's Messenger.","This means to accept the authority of His appointed successors and to adhere to the arrangements He made for the advancement of His Faith.","To break the Covenant is to reject or deliberately attempt to usurp or undermine the authority Bahá'u'lláh has established, while still claiming to be a Bahá'í.","Such an action constitutes an attack on the unity which is the Faith's distinguishing characteristic.","Anyone who persistently engages in such behavior becomes known as a Covenant-breaker and is therefore denied access to the Bahá'í community.","Such a person can gain re-admittance through genuine repentance.","Moral shortcomings, such as a failure to conform to Bahá'í standards, are not a breach of the Covenant.","The Fast","Virtually all of the world's religions emphasize fasting as a means of spiritual purification.","Each year, for example, Muslims abstain from food and drink between sunrise and sunset for twenty-eight days in a row.","Christ's reference to the importance of fasting is recorded in Chapters six and nine of the Gospel of Matthew.","Bahá'u'lláh called on Bahá'ís to refrain from eating or drinking from sunrise to sunset for nineteen consecutive days each year from 2 March to 20 March.","This period, known simply as "the Fast," is considered a time for deep reflection on one's own spiritual progress.","Efforts are made to detach oneself from material desires.","Bahá'ís rise before dawn to eat breakfast and to pray.","Those who are ill are exempt from fasting, as are pregnant and nursing women, people under 15 or over 70 years old, travelers, and those engaged in arduous physical labor.","The Nineteen Day Feast","The centerpiece of Bahá'í community life is the Nineteen Day Feast.","Held once every 19 days, it is the local community's regular worship gathering--and more.","Open to both adults and children, the Nineteen Day Feast is the regular gathering that promotes and sustains the unity of the local Bahá'í community.","Although its program is adaptable to a wide variety of cultural and social needs, the Feast always contains three elements: spiritual devotion, administrative consultation, and fellowship.","As such, the Feast combines religious worship with grassroots governance and social enjoyment.","The use of the word "feast" might seem to imply that a large meal will be served.","That is not necessarily the case.","While food and beverages are usually served, the term itself is meant to suggest that the community should enjoy a "spiritual feast" of worship, companionship and unity.","Bahá'u'lláh stressed the importance of gathering every nineteen days, "to bind your hearts together", even if nothing more than water is served.","During the devotional program, selections from the Bahá'í writings, and often the scriptures from other religions, are read aloud.","A general discussion follows, allowing every member a voice in community affairs and making the Feast an "arena of democracy at the very root of society." The Feast ends with a period for socializing.","The oneness of humanity","The idea that all humanity is one race forms the foundation for the other principles of social justice in the Bahá'í Faith.","Bahá'u'lláh condemned racial and ethnic prejudice, urging:",""Close your eyes to racial differences, and welcome all with the light of oneness."","Bahá'u'lláh also unequivocally proclaimed the equality of the sexes--at a time when the women's movement was only beginning its fight for suffrage in the West and such ideas were unheard of in the Middle East--thus becoming the first Founder of a world religion to explicitly uphold strict equality for women and men.","Indeed, girls should receive priority in education--if by some circumstance a family (or a society) cannot afford to educate its children equally.",""Until the reality of equality between men and women is fully established and attained, the highest social development of mankind is not possible", the Bahá'í scriptures state.","This challenge to full equality does not ignore natural differences between the sexes.","Bahá'u'lláh emphasized the importance of motherhood, fatherhood and family life.","Bahá'u'lláh's call for economic justice also reflects His central theme of human oneness.","He wrote extensively about the necessity of promoting economic justice and proposed specific remedies to help control the extreme inequalities of wealth in human society.","The redistribution of wealth through a tax on income, for example, and the concept of profit-sharing are both promoted in His teachings.","Education is given a special emphasis as humanity is considered capable of tremendous progress and advancement.",""Regard man as a mine rich in gems of inestimable value", wrote Bahá'u'lláh.",""Education can, alone, cause it to reveal its treasures, and enable mankind to benefit therefrom."","Education, accordingly, should be universal and should incorporate positive spiritual values and moral attitudes.","Bahá'ís envision a future in which even "basic education" goes beyond rote learning and the teaching of simple skills.","Students must be given the tools to analyze social conditions and requirements themselves, to take part in community planning and action, and to investigate truth on their own.","The oneness of humanity is an essential element of every Bahá'í curriculum.","The symbols","A simple nine-pointed star is generally used by Bahá'ís as a symbol of their Faith.","The number nine has significance in the Bahá'í Revelation.","Nine years after the announcement of the Báb in Shiráz, Bahá'u'lláh received the intimation of His mission in the dungeon in Teherán.","Nine, as the highest single-digit number, symbolizes completeness.","Since the Bahá'í Faith claims to be the fulfillment of the expectations of all prior religions, this symbol, as used for example in nine-sided Bahá'í temples, reflects that sense of fulfillment and completeness.","Of particular sacred significance to Bahá'ís are calligraphic forms of the word «Bahá» (Arabic for «Glory»), known as the «Greatest Name», a reference to Bahá'u'lláh.","In this category is the above symbol which is engraved on personal rings and on buildings to establish their Bahá'í identity.","Another calligraphic form of the Greatest Name involves an invocation in Arabic «Yá Bahá'u'l-Abhá», which says: "O Glory of the All Glorious." It is displayed in Bahá'í homes and places of Bahá'í activity.","9-Pointed Star Greatest Name Yá Bahá'u'l-Abhá","The Unknowable Essence","In elaborating how Bahá'ís view the relationship between God, religion and humanity, the best place to start is with the Bahá'í concept of God.","And that concept begins with the realization that God is unknowable.","Bahá'u'lláh taught that God is the Creator of the universe and its absolute ruler.","His nature is limitless, infinite and all-powerful.","It is therefore impossible for mortal men and women, with limited intellect and finite capacities, to directly comprehend or understand the Divine reality, Its motives or the way It operates.","While unknowable in His essence, God has chosen to make Himself known to humanity through a series of divine Messengers.","These Messengers have been the only way to knowledge of God, and their number includes the Founders of the world's great religions: Moses, Krishna, Zoroaster, Buddha, Christ, and Muhammad--to name those Messengers who are best known.","Bahá'ís also include other prophets in this group, such as Noah and Abraham.","The Messengers, in Bahá'u'lláh's words, are "Manifestations of God." The Manifestations are perfect mirrors of God's attributes and perfection, providing a pure channel for the communication of God's will for humanity.","This idea--that God has sent a succession of Messengers to educate humanity--is called "progressive revelation." An analogy is the process of schooling.","Just as children start with simple ideas in the primary grades, and are given increasingly complex knowledge as they move on through secondary school and college, so humanity has been "educated" by a series of Manifestations.","In each age, the teachings of the Messengers of God have conformed not to Their knowledge but to the level of our collective maturity.","Unity the theme","The Bahá'í Faith's progressive approach to human society originates with Bahá'u'lláh's emphasis on unity.","Indeed, if one were to characterize His teachings in a single word, that word would be unity.","Throughout His writings, Bahá'u'lláh emphasized the importance--and the reality--of unity and oneness.","First, God is one.","All of the world's great religions are also one.","They represent humanity's responses to the revelations of the word and will of God for humanity by successive Messengers from the one God.","These understandings lie at the heart of the concept of unity in Bahá'u'lláh's teachings.","From this fundamental concept of Divine and religious unity, other principles emerge.","Bahá'u'lláh teaches that all humans, as creations of the one God, are also one people.","Distinctions of race, nation, class or ethnic origin are ephemeral when understood in this context.","Likewise, any notions of individual, tribal, provincial or national superiority are discarded in the Bahá'í Faith.","Speaking through Bahá'u'lláh, the voice of God proclaims:",""Know ye not why We created you all from the same dust? la igualdad completa de los géneros; el reconocimiento de la unidad esencial de las grandes religiones; la eliminación de la pobreza y riqueza extremas; la educación universal; la armonía de la ciencia y la religión; Una voz digna y suave me invitó a tomar asiento, y prosiguió: "¡Alabado sea Dios porque has llegado hasta mí!...","Has venido a ver a un prisionero y desterrado...","No deseamos sino el bien del mundo y la felicidad de las naciones, sin embargo, nos consideran causante de sedición y de rivalidades, merecedor de cautiverio y destierro...","Estas luchas, este derramamiento de sangre y esta discordia cesarán, y todos los hombres serán miembros de una sola familia...","Que ningún hombre se gloríe de que ama a su patria, que más bien se gloríe de que ama a sus semejantes".","Enseñanzas morales y sociales","Una de las características distintivas de los Escritos de Bahá'u'lláh estriba en el grado de precisión con que éstos describen los temas fundamentales a que se enfrenta hoy día la humanidad.","En Sus obras Bahá'u'lláh abogó por una reestructuración completa del orden social del mundo.","Todos los aspectos de la vida debían quedar afectados por tal renovación, desde la moralidad personal, pasando por la economía, al Gobierno; desde el desarrollo de la comunidad a la práctica religiosa.","El tema central presente en los escritos de Bahá'u'lláh se resume así.","Hay una sola humanidad, y ha llegado la hora de que se funda en una sola sociedad.","Gracias a un proceso histórico irresistible, las barreras tradicionales de raza, clase, credo, fe y nación van a derrumbarse.","Las fuerzas que animan tal proceso -afirma Baháu'lláh- alumbrarán una civilización universal.","Las crisis que afligen al planeta en la actualidad plantean crudamente la necesidad de que todos sus pueblos acepten que son parte de una misma humanidad y trabajen hacia la consecución de una sociedad global realmente unida.","Bahá'u'lláh describió algunos de los principios rectores sobre los que habrá de asentarse una civilización semejante.","Entre ellos figuran: la eliminación de todas las formas de prejuicio; la igualdad completa de los dos géneros; el reconocimiento de la unidad esencial de las grandes religiones; la eliminación de la pobreza y riqueza extremas; la educación universal; la armonía de la ciencia y la religión; el equilibrio sostenible entre naturaleza y tecnología; un elevado sentido de la ética personal; el establecimiento de un sistema federal mundial basado en la seguridad colectiva y la unidad de la humanidad.","Dichos principios, al enlazar entre sí cuestiones referentes al papel de la mujer, las relaciones raciales, la justicia económica, la degradación medioambiental y el orden mundial, vienen a ilustrar las preocupaciones que han animado a uno de los movimientos más dinámicos del siglo.","Preocupaciones que luego han ocupado lugares muy destacados en el orden del día de la humanidad.","Nunca antes ha habido un vaticinador, futurista o profeta cuya visión haya descrito tan certeramente los rasgos críticos del panorama humano.","Lejos de haber sido relegadas al olvido, las cuestiones abordadas por Bahá'u'lláh dominan hoy la vida colectiva de la humanidad.","Idioma auxiliar universal","Bahá'u'lláh aboga por la adopción de un idioma auxiliar internacional que sirva para promover la unidad.",""Se acerca el día cuando todos los pueblos de la tierra habrán adoptado un idioma universal y un sistema común de escritura", Bahá'u'lláh escribe en una de sus Tablas.",""Cuando esto llegue a ser realidad, cualquiera que sea la ciudad hacia la que una persona se proponga viajar, será como si esa persona hubiese entrado en su propia casa".","Importa destacar el término "auxiliar".","La exhortación de Bahá'u'lláh no es un mandato para la uniformidad cultural.","A decir verdad, las enseñanzas Bahá'ís destacan y promueven el valor de la diversidad cultural.","La Alianza","Los Bahá'ís creen que el rasgo característico de la Fe Bahá'í, la unidad, se debe a la promesa expresa que Dios ha hecho a la humanidad por la que asegura la continuidad de la guía espiritual a la muerte de Bahá'u'lláh.","Esta promesa suele conocerse como el Convenio o la Alianza.","Por supuesto, la idea de una Alianza entre Dios y la humanidad resulta familiar a los seguidores de otras religiones.","Muchos Judíos creen que Dios ha establecido una Alianza con ellos por el que ha prometido guiarlos siempre que cumplan Sus leyes.","Asimismo, son muchos los Cristianos que creen que Jesús estableció una Alianza similar con Sus seguidores.","Para los Bahá'ís la Alianza establecida por Bahá'u'lláh supone tanto una confirmación de la promesa de que Dios guiaría a la humanidad, como un sistema garante de la continuidad.","En concreto, la Alianza se identifica con la sucesión de Bahá'u'lláh, según queda establecida en Su Testamento.","Esta línea pasa de Bahá'u'lláh a Su hijo, 'Abdu'l-Bahá, y a continuación de 'Abdu'I-Bahá a Shoghi Effendi, y de ahí a la Casa Universal de Justicia.","Ser fiel a la Alianza de Bahá'u'lláh es serle obediente como Mensajero de Dios.","Ello entraña aceptar la autoridad de los sucesores designados y adherirse a las estipulaciones que dejó para el avance de Su Fe.","Romper la Alianza es rechazar o tratar deliberadamente de usurpar o minar la autoridad que Bahá'u'lláh ha establecido a la par que se hace profesión de ser Bahá'í.","Tal acción constituye un ataque a la unidad, que es el sello distintivo de la Fe.","Quienquiera que persista en esta clase de conducta es conocido como violador de la Alianza y en cuanto tal se le deniega entrada en la comunidad Bahá'í.","Tal persona puede ser readmitida si muestra auténtico arrepentimiento.","Los errores morales, por ejemplo no ajustarse al patrón de vida Bahá'í, no suponen ruptura del Convenio.","La ciencia y la religión","El tema de la unidad también está presente en las enseñanzas Bahá'ís relativas a la ciencia.","Los escritos de Bahá'u'lláh presentan la religión y la ciencia como enfoques diferentes y armoniosos que hacen posible una mejor comprensión de la realidad.","Los dos caminos son, en esencia, compatibles y se refuerzan mutuamente.","El método científico es el instrumento con que la humanidad cuenta para entender el lado físico del universo.","Gracias a él puede describirse la composición del núcleo atómico o la estructura del DNA.","En él se encuentra la llave que da paso al descubrimiento de nuevas tecnologías.","Sin embargo, la ciencia no nos instruye en el uso que debamos hacer de tales conocimientos.","La revelación de Dios, en cambio, sirve de fundamento para los fines y valores de nuestra vida.","Da respuesta a las preguntas sobre la moralidad, sentido de la vida y relación con Dios, preguntas que la ciencia no puede responder.","La investigación independiente de la realidad, sea científica o religiosa, recibe una atención especial en los escritos de Bahá'u'lláh.","Las personas deben esforzarse por liberarse de los prejuicios, las presunciones y la mera adhesión a la tradición o autoridad tradicional.","La consulta es un instrumento crítico para el descubrimiento de la verdad.","La Comunidad Internacional Bahá'í y Naciones Unidas","La Comunidad Mundial Bahá'í gestiona sus relaciones con el mundo a través de las oficinas de la Comunidad Internacional Bahá'í.","Desde 1948, la Comunidad Internacional Bahá'í viene gozando de reconocimiento ante las Naciones Unidas como Organización No Gubernamental.","Desde 1970 posee estatus consultivo ante el Consejo Social y Económico de las Naciones Unidas (ECOSOC), y ante el Fondo de Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF).","Asimismo mantiene relaciones de trabajo con la Organización Mundial de la Salud (OMS), y está asociada con el Programa de Naciones Unidas para el Medio Ambiente (UNEP).","Las labores de la Comunidad Internacional Bahá'í se realizan a través de oficinas especializadas como la Secretaría General, la Oficina de Naciones Unidas, la Oficina de Información Pública, la Oficina del Medio Ambiente, y la Oficina para el Avance de la Mujer.","Mediante representantes establecidos en el Centro Mundial Bahá'í (Haifa), Nueva York, Ginebra, París, Hong Kong, Londres, Jerusalén y Fiyi, las oficinas acometen una gran variedad de actividades en pro de la paz, los derechos humanos, la educación, la sanidad, la conservación del medio ambiente, el desarrollo sostenible y la promoción de la igualdad de la mujer.","Muchas de estas actividades son emprendidas en colaboración con comunidades nacionales Bahá'ís.","De ellas se da cuenta en el Boletín internacional ONE COUNTRY (con versión en español).","La Comunidad Internacional Bahá'í colabora con muchas organizaciones internacionales y ONGs.","Es miembro de la Red sobre Religión y Conservación del Fondo Mundial para la Naturaleza, el Centro para Nuestro Futuro Común, la Red de Educación para Todos, la Conferencia Mundial sobre Religión y Paz, y los Abogados para la Seguridad de los Alimentos de África.","La consulta","Los cuerpos administrativos de la Fe Bahá'í utilizan en todos sus niveles un sistema de toma de decisiones, sin confrontación, conocido como la "consulta".","Los principios de la consulta fueron establecidos en los Escritos de Bahá'u'lláh.","Como procedimiento para buscar la verdad y lograr el consenso admiten ser aplicados en un amplio campo de temas, o lo que es igual, en todas las esferas en que se requiera colaboración y decisiones.","Estos principios se emplean no sólo en las propias instituciones sino también en los negocios de propiedad Bahá'í, en las escuelas dirigidas por Bahá'ís y en la vida cotidiana de las familias Bahá'ís.","En esencia, la consulta procura construir el consenso de una manera que una a las partes antes que dividirlas.","Anima a la expresión de la diversidad de opiniones y actúa para controlar la lucha por el poder, tan común en los sistemas tradicionales de toma de decisiones.","La Esencia incognoscible","La mejor manera de explicar cómo ven los Bahá'ís su relación con Dios, con la religión y con sus prójimos es partiendo del concepto Bahá'í de "Dios".","Para empezar, dicho concepto conlleva reconocer que Dios es en esencia incognoscible.","Bahá'u'lláh enseña que Dios es el Creador del Universo y su regidor absoluto.","La naturaleza de Dios es ilimitada, infinita y todopoderosa.","Por lo tanto, ningún ser mortal, hombre o mujer, puede mediante su intelecto y capacidades finitas comprender o entender la realidad divina, sus motivos y forma de proceder.","El que sea incognoscible en Su esencia no impide que Dios se dé a conocer a la humanidad a través de una serie de Mensajeros Divinos, que son la única vía de acercamiento.","Entre ellos se cuentan los Fundadores de las grandes religiones: Moisés, Krishna, Zoroastro, Buda, Cristo y Muhammad, por mencionar los más conocidos.","Los Bahá'ís también consideran profetas a Noé y Abraham.","Los Mensajeros, en palabras de Bahá'u'lláh, son las "Manifestaciones de Dios".","Las Manifestaciones son espejos perfectos en donde se reflejan los atributos y perfecciones de Dios; de esta manera se convierten en canales de comunicación de la voluntad divina para la humanidad.","Dicha idea--es decir, que Dios haya enviado a Sus mensajeros para educar a la humanidad--es denominada "revelación progresiva".","Por decirlo con una analogía: tal y como los niños comienzan aprendiendo ideas sencillas en sus primeros años de escuela y van recibiendo unos conocimientos más complejos según avanzan en cursos sucesivos, del mismo modo la humanidad ha sido "educada" por una serie de Mensajeros de Dios.","En cada época, las enseñanzas de los Mensajeros de Dios se amoldan al nivel de madurez colectiva alcanzado por la humanidad.","La Fiesta de Diecinueve Días","El eje de la vida comunitaria Bahá'í gira en torno a la Fiesta de Diecinueve Dias, un acto en que la comunidad local se reúne para adorar a Dios y celebrar su convivencia.","Cada diecinueve días esta fiesta, abierta a niños y adultos, aspira a mantener y renovar la unidad de la comunidad local.","Si bien su programa se adapta a una gran variedad de necesidades culturales y sociales, hay tres elementos que nunca están ausentes: los actos devocionales, la consulta administrativa y la camaradería.","En calidad de tal, la Fiesta combina la adoración con el gobierno democrático y la alegría festiva.","Puede que el uso de la palabra "fiesta" sugiera a algunos lectores la idea de un gran festín.","No hay tal.","Aunque la comida y la bebida pueden estar presentes, el término elude a la "fiesta espiritual" de la adoración, unidad y compañerismo.","Bahá'u'lláh insistió en la importancia de que hubiese una reunión cada diecinueve días con el fin de "cimentar los corazanes", incluso si en ella se agasajaba sólo con agua.","Durante el período devocional suelen leerse en voz alta pasajes de los escritos Bahá'ís e incluso, en ocasiones, de otras escrituras religiosas.","Acto seguido viene una discusión de asuntos comunitarios donde todos pueden hacer oír su voz, lo que convierte la Fiesta en un "foro democrático instalado en la raíz misma de la sociedad".","La Fiesta termina con un período de confraternización.","La mujer: igualdad sin reparos","Por primera vez en la historia el Fundador la proclamación del Báb en Shiráz, Bahá'u'lláh recibía los primeros vislumbres de Su misión en una mazmorra de Teherán.","Como número, el nueve es el dígito simple más elevado, por lo que simboliza el acabamiento.","Puesto que la Fe Bahá'í reclama ser el cumplimiento de las esperanzas de todas las anteriores revelaciones, este símbolo, tal y como aparece usado en los templos de nueve lados, refleja creen que la preparación para el matrimonio es un elemento esencial en todo matrimonio feliz.","El proceso de preparación incluye como requisito el consentimiento de los padres ante la elección de pareja.","Por supuesto, con esto no quiere decirse que los matrimonios Bahá'ís estén preestablecidos.","Todo Bahá'í es libre de proponerse en matrimonio según su albedrío.","No obstante, una vez que la elección esté hecha, los padres tienen el derecho y la obligación de sopesar su consentimiento, y en esa medida guiar a sus hijos e hijas en una de las decisiones más importantes de su vida.","Los primeros seguidores se desenvolvieron dentro de una cultura islámica.","Hoy en día, los especialistas de la religión reconocen que tal referencia sería equivalente a llamar al Cristianismo "secta" del Judaísmo, o decir del Budismo que es una "confesión Hindú".","Si bien es verdad que Jesucristo fue Judío y Buda fue Hindú, sus mensajes religiosos no fueron meras reinterpretaciones de sus religiones de origen, sino que las trascendieron.","Del mismo modo, Bahá'u'lláh ha sentado cimientos espirituales totalmente nuevos.","Sus escritos constituyen Escritos Sagrados y Su obra excede con creces a la Christianity.","According to the 1992 Encyclopedia Britannica Book of the Year, the Bahá'í Faith is established in 205 sovereign countries and dependent territories (see graph).","This point was first made in 1982, in the World Christian Encyclopedia.","That volume reported on the work of some 500 scholars, demographers and statisticians who conducted the first comprehensive survey of religious believers worldwide.","How many Bahá'ís are there?","Accurately estimating the number of followers of any world religion is a difficult and complex task.","In some regions of the world, religious persecution or government oppression may make individual believers reluctant to identify themselves.","In other areas, poor communication or travel networks make it difficult to collect data.","With these difficulties in mind, demographers at the Bahá'í World Centre have attempted to be as conservative as possible in estimating the number of Bahá'ís worldwide.","Their most recent survey yielded an estimate of more than 6,000,000 Bahá'ís.","The inherent conservatism of their methodology is evident when Bahá'í statistics are compared with estimates made by other religious scholars.","Each year, for example, the Encyclopedia Britannica publishes a table of religious demographic statistics.","According to the 1992 Britannica Book of the Year, there were 5,400,000 Bahá'ís worldwide in six years, an increase of roughly 43%.","Making any comparison between the rate of growth of the Bahá'í Faith and other religions must be carefully qualified.","Since Bahá'í demographers are not involved in gathering statistics on other religions, it would be inappropriate to make any official characterization about the rate of growth of the Bahá'í Faith in relation to other religious groups.","However, statistics from the World Christian Encyclopedia, which is perhaps the best-respected work on this subject, indicate that the Bahá'í faith is among, the fastest growing of the independent world religions.","The World Christian Encyclopedia estimated that the worldwide Bahá'í community grew at an average rate of 3,63% per year during the 15 years from 1970 to 1985.","Published in 1982, it reports on the work of Christian demographers who undertook a decade-long survey of religious believers worldwide in the 1970s.","The survey attempted to accurately determine the number of Christians--and followers of other religions--in every country, and to make projections about their growth.","A comparison of rates of growth among the independent world religions, as reported in the World Christian Encyclopedia, is shown in the graph below.","While these figures are more than seven years old, they remain virtually the only widely published side-by- side comparison of the rate of growth for various religions.","It is important to qualify these figures by noting that, according to the World Christian Encyclopedia, some sects or sub-groups-of Christianity and Islam grew faster than the Bahá'í Faith during this period.","None of these sects or sub-groups, however, were listed as having followers in more than 100 countries.","The Bahá'í Faith, was listed as having established "significant" communities in more than 192 countries in 1982, at the time of the Encyclopedia's publication.","More recent figures, reported in the 1992 Britannica Book of the Year, show the Bahá'í Faith as having significant communities in 205 countries, second only to Christianity in its geographic spread.","Statisticians at the Department of documents known as "Tablets," most of them addressed to individuals among His followers.","He has Himself estimated that the collected Tablets constitute over a hundred volumes.","Moving easily between Persian and Arabic, both of which languages Bahá'u'lláh employed with superb mastery, the Writings are also characterized by a wide range of styles.","The heart of Bahá'u'lláh's ethical teachings is to be found in a small book entitled "The Hidden Words", a compilation of aphorisms dating from the earliest days of His mission.","The work He describes as a distillation of the spiritual guidance contained in the successive revelations of God.","Bahá'u'lláh's principal exposition of His doctrinal message is a book entitled the "Kitab-i-lqan" (The Book of Certitude).","In laying out the entire panorama of the Divine purpose, the "Iqan" deals with the great questions which have always lain at the heart of religious life: God, the nature of humanity, the purpose of life, and the function of Revelation.","Among the best known of Bahá'u'lláh's mystical writings is a small work entitled "The Seven Valleys".","In poetic language, it traces the stages of the soul 's journey to union with its Creator.","Foremost among Bahá'u'lláh's writings is the "Kitab-i-Aqdas" (The Most Holy Book).","Revealed during the darkest days of His imprisonment in Acre, the "Aqdas", "Mother Book" of the Bahá'í dispensation, is the chief repository of the laws and institutions which Bahá'u'lláh designed for the World Order He conceived.","An example of Bahá'u'lláh's own handwriting.","The process of translating the sacred writings into other languages is on-going.","The standard for the work of translation into English was established by Shoghi Effendi, who headed the Bahá'í Faith from 1921 to 1957.","Educated at Oxford, he was able to provide translations that reflect not only a brilliant command of the English language, but also an authoritative exposition of the Texts' meaning.","In undertaking the challenge of finding an English style which would faithfully convey the exalted and emotive character of Bahá'u'lláh's use of Persian and Arabic, Shoghi Effendi chose a slightly archaic form of English which echoes the "King James" version of the Bible.","He also chose, in accordance with this style, to use the masculine pronoun for references to God--although Bahá'u'lláh's teachings make clear that no gender can be attached to the Creator.","Shoghi Effendi also chose to make extensive use of diacritical marks as a guide to the pronunciation of Arabic and Persian names, a practice that is followed throughout the Bahá'í community today.","The result is a style that acts as bridge between modern English and the Persian and Arabic style in
